The Bronisław Rutkowski State Primary and Secondary Music School in Kraków – Podgórze was established on 31 October 1964. Originally founded as a branch of State Music School No. 1 at 23 Basztowa Street, it became the first music school in Kraków’s working-class district. Initially operating across several locations, the school was eventually granted its own premises in 1968 – a former 19th-century primary school building at 10 Józefińska Street.
Thanks to the vision of its first director, Associate Professor Antoni Mroczek, and the dedication of a committed teaching staff, the school developed rapidly. In 1974, following substantial refurbishment, it was named in honour of Bronisław Rutkowski – a distinguished organist and music educator. Since 2002, the school has been led by Marta Nowaczyk, MA.
Today, it offers tuition in nearly all instrumental disciplines and is home to a symphony orchestra, choir and numerous chamber ensembles. In 2008, a secondary music school was added, merging with the primary school to form a single institution.
A core principle of the school’s mission is artistic engagement. Pupils regularly participate in concerts, national and international competitions, auditions organised by the centre for Artistic education (CEA), and local cultural events. The school also organises its own festivals, including the Contemporary Music Festival Srebrna Szybka and the Małopolska Review of Rhythm Ensembles. It fosters a creative and supportive environment that nurtures the artistic growth of young musicians.
