Celebrated for his exceptional palette of colours and remarkable technique, Sotiris Athanasiou explores a wide repertoire, from seventeenth-century works to contemporary music. In his quest to expand the horizons of the guitar, he has collaborated with numerous composers. His solo career began at the age of just ten with his first recital, and he now performs across Europe and Asia as both a soloist and a chamber musician.
A multiple prize-winner, he has appeared with leading orchestras in his native Greece and has performed on French radio (France Musique) and Greek national television (ERT). Together with French accordionist Julien Beautemps, he forms Duo Argos – a dynamic duo renowned for their original arrangements of masterpieces such as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Ravel’s Boléro.
Named “Classical Guitar Revelation 2024” by Guitare Classique magazine, Sotiris Athanasiou has won numerous prestigious international competitions, including First Prize at the Antony International Guitar Competition (France), the Seville International Guitar Festival (Spain), the Roland Dyens International Competition (France), the Veria International Guitar Festival (Greece) and the Asia International Guitar Festival (Thailand).
A Banque Populaire Foundation laureate (2023), he is regularly invited to give masterclasses at international festivals and currently teaches at the Regional Conservatoire in Versailles. Known for his innovation and profound musicality, Sotiris is a passionate and inspiring teacher, dedicated to sharing his art with the next generation of guitarists.
